Most Commonly Asked Questions

Thank you for expressing an interest in That’s Dancing.  Following is general information about classes, including the answers to the most commonly asked questions.  Of course you can call us with any additional questions or concerns and we will be happy to talk with you. Fall classes run from September through June (recital time).

How much does it cost to register?

There is a registration fee of $20.00 per family.   This fee is charged yearly.

 How do we register?

Come to registration at That’s Dancing on Mon-Thurs, August 11-14 from 5:00-7:30 pm.

Call the studio (491-6200) and reserve your spot in class if you are unable to attend registration. We also accept registrations throughout the year when openings are available. If our class times do not work into your schedule, we do keep waiting lists and contact families as new classes are opened.

What do your dance classes consist of?

Most classes meet once a week and are a combination of tap, ballet and jazz. During the summer, we offer specialized workshops in addition to our regular classes that focus on specific areas of dance (i.e. dance team, technique workshops, tap, lyrical, jazz, hip hop, pointe and ballet, etc.).We strongly encourage dancers to take additional ballet and barre classes.  Ballet promotes correct posture and balance that will be retained throughout life.

What will we need for class?

We use pink ballet shoes and black tap shoes.  There is no specific dress code for recreational students. Any style/color of leotard and tights, ballet skirts, unitards is acceptable. Check with staff or teacher if in doubt about shoes. Dance shoes can be found at Kinney Dance Wear on Hurstbourne Pkwy in the Shoe Carnival shopping center or at Vibes on Shelbyville Rd.  Young students can also find shoes and dancewear at places such as Wal Mart, Target, etc, although the quality is not as good as those found in a dancewear specialty store.  Generally, you will not need to buy different shoes for recital. However, occasionally you do. Sometimes the costume chosen for a class will not “match” pink and black shoes and there is a need to require a different shoe color for our spring recital. Please be aware of that. This is an exception rather than a rule at That’s Dancing.

Can Parents Watch?

We have four studios, and parents can watch all classes via closed circuit monitors linked to all four studios, located in our waiting room. This is great, especially for the beginner student. Parents can watch, and the dancers aren’t distracted.  And the young dancers love being “on TV”!

What other expenses are involved?

We order costumes for the June recital in November/December, so the estimated costume fee ($65.00) is due in November.  You will be billed or credited in January, depending on the actual cost of your costume.  If a costume is needed for any other small show (like the Christmas shows) it is very minimal in cost and usually something that the students can wear to class.

The only other real expense is the recital fee, which is due in the spring.  This fee was $60.00 for one student or $75.00 per family in 2008, and will be comparable in 2009.  As soon as the rental fees are locked in for the venue, the recital fee will be set for 2009.  This fee covers all of the recital expenses, including free admission for all of your family and friends, trophies for all students, and the rental of the theater for both the rehearsal and recital, and rental of back drops, props, etc.  As you will see, our productions are very elaborate, organized shows.

We sell ads in our annual program book, which not only helps cover recital expenses, but is a great way to support your favorite dancer! It has become quite a tradition at our studio to place ads in the book for your dancer and his/her class!   We do not make a profit on the recitals, so please consider buying or selling ad space!

What is recital?

We have one BIG recital a year, which is generally the second Saturday of June. Recital 2009 is set for Saturday, June 13th.   Dress rehearsal is Friday, June 12th.   All of our students perform a tap dance and a jazz dance in either the morning or evening recital, and they perform a ballet dance in our annual ballet production. Our 2007 ballet was “Beauty and the Beast”  and our 2008 ballet was “Peter Pan.  (We’ve done ,Cinderella, Toy Story, Sound of Music, Wizard of Oz , Sleeping Beauty, and The Little Mermaid  among others in the past.)

We also do some small, very informal shows during the year (i.e. Easter Seals, Gaslight Parade, Miss Jeffersontown Pageant, Derby Float Pre-view show, etc.)  All classes dance at nursing homes at Christmas time. The residents look forward to our visit all year long!  Always watch your mailboxes (in the waiting room) for information.  Please also check the handout rack in the waiting room.

 Do we offer competitive classes?

We have a large number of dancers who dance at a competitive level, but we are just as committed to our noncompetitive students.  We do not force any one to compete, but will encourage those who show an interest. Please see teacher or office manager for additional information.

What about the teachers?

That’s Dancing has been in business for 18 years, and has a wonderful staff of teachers and assistants to show for it.  We have full time and part time teachers (most have been with That’s Dancing since its opening) our ballet director, who is retired from the Louisville Ballet, as well as other dancers from the Louisville Ballet, Indianapolis, and Charlestown to name a few.  We also have wonderful assistants that help with many classes each week. We are always complimented on the patience and care that our instructors give to the students.

Where is That’s Dancing located?

The studio is at 2516 Plantside Drive, which is one block off of Watterson Trail.  We are in the same building as Service Solutions. There are parking lots on both sides of the building, and you can enter the studio from either side.

Are classes cancelled when JCPS are?

No.  Check your That’s Dancing calendar for any holiday, and call the studio (491-6200) if in doubt because of severe weather. If classes are ever cancelled due to severe weather it will be televised on WHAS11. We distribute calendars the first week of every month to remind you of important dates. (See class mailbox)

Will you inform us with new information?

You will receive frequent informative handouts all year long. Each class has a mail slot in the waiting room and it is your responsibility to check it for any papers on a weekly basis.

We look forward to teaching your children for a long time to come.  Please feel free to contact us for any more information you need. Thank you again for expressing an interest in That’s Dancing.
